  • Fires in Australia

This past weekend Australia’s deadliest bushfires began in Victoria and as of tonight 21 fires are still burning just about 25 miles outside of Melbourne. 181 people have died and that figure may rise to 200 or 300 as more bodies are uncovered and as the fires continue to burn. The fires are responsible for destroying 1,033 homes and leaving approx. 5,000 people homeless.

Music for Relief is responding to the deadly bushfires with the following measures:

Accepting donations for victims of the bushfires via www.musicforrelief.org (we will be supporting the Red Cross Victorian Brushfires Appeals Fund)

Reaching out to our artist and music industry partners to support and appeal for funds for this disaster.

Contributing the proceeds of our upcoming online eBay auction of the Street Fighter IV video game cabinets to this effort. The auction will run from February 24th through March 5th at http://www.eBay.com/musicforrelief

Asking our music industry and artist partners for additional items they can donate for this auction.

Please visit http://www.musicforrelief.org to find ways to get involved, and remember to visit all your favorite bands' message boards and encourage the artists and fans to join MFR.

  • MOCA Apprentices

Last night I visited the Museum Of Contemporary Art (MOCA) in L.A., and had the privilege of speaking with a group of students from their Apprenticeship program. I met for about an hour with twenty exceptionally bright young people about art, music, credibility, commerce, and Lil' Wayne (they seemed intrigued / repulsed by him for some reason, LOL). We looked at my art, and the creation of the art of Minutes To Midnight, including in-progress versions of our logo and and album cover from that album. It was a lot of fun, and I probably learned as much as the "students" did. Thanks to Denise Grey and my friends at JANM for helping put it together. Here are some images...

  • Music For Relief in 2008

2008 was a busy year for our charity organization, MUSIC FOR RELIEF. On the following page, I've added a summary of the efforts MFR was involved in this past year. A million thanks for everyone's support.

We all hope that our friends and families will never be forced to face a natural disaster; but when these events occur, MFR hopes to play a central role in providing relief to the victims.

If any of your other favorite groups or artists are not involved with MFR, feel free to go to their websites and encourage them to join in. MFR is not Linkin Park's charity; we hope to be able to include as many artists as possible in the future. The greater the number of musicians and fans involved, the bigger difference we can make for the victims of natural disasters.

  • Gay Marriage / LGBT rights

I'm going to go out on a limb on this one. Opinions of the commentator aside, let's talk about the issue of gay rights in the following piece. The following was an opinion piece on Keith Olbermann's show:

I am pretty sure this conversation is not going to fit in the comments section here on MS.com, so: to the first commenter, please start a new thread on linkinpark.com for discussion on this topic. As a reminder: flaming, slurs (including ones directed at sexual orientation and race), and intimidation will result in a ban of your account, so be respectful.

Thoughtful, intelligent contribution to the topic is the only kind I want to see. Think carefully before you post.

EDIT: based on the comments after this post, I thought some of you might want to see this calendar showing the peaceful protests that are going on in CA. http://www.eqca.org/site/apps/cd/month.asp?c=kuLRJ9MRKrH&b=4028667

EDIT 2: some of you who posted here may be interested in this as well: A large group is planning and organizing a nationwide (and somewhat worldwide) effort. Their website, with information on the protest near you, is here: http://jointheimpact.wetpaint.com/
