Eleven days to go until Glorious Excess (Dies) opens here in L.A. I just got home from our "world lap" as Dave called it...We circled the globe in about 5 weeks, finishing with the show here in Pomona this weekend, and I've been putting the final touches on the art show via email and expensive international call :) It's been tough, but I think everything is coming together.

I don't want to tell the story of the show before you see any art, but here's an idea of what to expect: in the first show, our star character exploded onto the scene. He was violent, filthy rich, and world-famous. I hoped to start conversations with the work--not just critique our obsession with fame, money, and stardom. I hope you guys also saw a sense of humor there, in my effort to figure out what I thought about celebrity, spending time on both the inside and out.

In this new show, our "star" completely implodes. He begins the show as an overblown superstar, and works his way to a psychadelic, fame-induced nirvana. The end will be up to you to interpret.

I'll be doing coverage of the show here, so for those of you who are out of town, you'll get a taste of what it's like. For those that can make it...see you there.

PS: on an ironic note, Michael Jackson's birthday was August 29th--the same day as the opening.

  • Glorious Excess and "The Skull"

I looked at some great pieces online promoting the upcoming Glorious Excess show recently. Thanks to all the awesome folks who have given the show a shout out (like http://www.juxtapoz.com/Current/linkin-parks-mike-shinoda-at-japanese-american-national-museum-glorious-excess-dies and http://hypebeast.com/2009/07/mike-shinoda-glorious-excess-dies-exhibition-los-angeles/).

As you could guess, there were a couple people (read: cynical internet crybabies) who have commented, trying to call me out for "Damien Hirst" appropriation (Note: these are usually the same people who call Takashi Murakami "the guy who did the Kanye West cover"). Normally, I'd let this kind of dumbfuckery slide, but I figured I'd address it, since maybe they just didn't know better.

The skull imagery--besides being an obvious sex/drugs/rock n' roll reference--was a tip of the hat to the vanitas movement in 15th/16th century Europe. Hirst aside, it would be an insane task to list the amount of vanitas themes in modern art, outsider/street art, tattoo art, and rock / punk art. Whether they know it or not, a great deal of the stuff references the same idea the vanitas painters were getting at: the transience of life and inevitability of death...the fact that, no matter how much stuff you accumulate, you can't take it with you in the end. My pieces are my own, personal perspective on it--a perspective that is heavily influenced by the bizarre and unique life experience that I have had.

  • End of Tour Update

Hey guys...thanks for the suggestions here http://www.mikeshinoda.com/blog/responses_to_fans/poa_intro about what to rap over the "Points Of Authority" intro. I threw some of "Step Up" over it the other night, and "Dedicated" last night. Dedicated sounded pretty good, in particular.

Three more shows to go on this tour (Shanghai, Macau, and back to L.A.), then we're home...and the Glorious Excess (Dies) art show kicks off on the 29th. I'm finalizing all the last minute details for the show: the art is being delivered to the museum, the book has gone to print, and I'm planning the rest of the exciting details of the show. I'll try to cover as much of it as I can, here on mikeshinoda.com, for all of you that live too far away to make it. But for those of you that can come, I hope eo see you there. There's nothing like seeing the art in person...
