Some more responses to fans' comments and questions here on MS.com:

Posted by ritzifying (in response to Music Middle Class): Oh well. Opportunity isn't easy to find in Pennsylvania anyway. I guess not having money and not being from CA or NY, YouTube and MySpace are still the best ways to go. :p

M: I'm happy to inform you that this is not true; you have access to the entire world online! I'm not going to promote any specific businesses that will partner with you in doing this, but there are a bunch of web-based services you can sign up for to sell your music online. Record your music at home, sell or give away the mp3s online, and promote.

Posted by ArielCahen (in response to Music Middle Class): I was going to post a comment when I saw this: "I guess this middle class of artists always existed, it didn't evolve all of a sudden. They just needed a platform. and see? Globalization, Internet and social networks provided it (Wasn't that the way LP started out, too?)", by SaraLX. The only thing I do not agree with is that this middle class of artists always existed. They didn't. I think it's a new phenomenon that, yea, became possible thanks to the globalization and the technological revolution (internet and the new medias). Nowdays you can record a song on your notebook, upload it onto myspace and take it out with you on your ipod. It makes it simpler for you to reach people anywhere...

M: Correct. As few as fifteen years ago, when home recording software and the ease of internet promotion and distribution were not widely available, recording artists were either "signed" or "unsigned." I think it's safe to say those terms are outdated. Today, it's all about creativity, technology, and rights when choosing from the myriads of methods of making and putting out your music.

    Other notes:

    • Chester's back is recovering well. He is still scheduled for regular visits to the doctor, but he's able to go about most of his daily routine. He had a scare the other day when he was recording a vocal; in the middle of a take, his back seized up. he thought he might need to go back to the hospital, but after some rest and doctor's advice, it relaxed again. Things are looking good. Thanks for your support!

    • Chi from Deftones is doing better. He still has a long way to go, but everyone seems optimistic. He's in our thoughts...on a related note, please remember to wear a seat belt. http://deftonesinstudio.blogspot.com/

    Thanks, mike

  • Comments Rules

    November 7, 2008 84 Comments

In the past few months, I've changed the rules about commenting here on MS.com. I think I forgot to properly explain why I changed the rules about character limit and multi-posting.

If you take away one piece of information from here today, let it be this: if you edit your post and delete the original text, it makes it harder for me to include you in a "responses to comments" post. I want to include your thoughts, so don't erase them, and don't multi-post :)

The comments section is limited in order to keep it manageable for me to pick through, and to challenge you to be succinct and thoughtful. Don't waste words--slow down, and say what you need to say in the most direct way you can!

    Thanks,

    mike

  • SHORT UPDATE

    October 27, 2008

Just a quick update: more new functions are coming soon to mikeshinoda.com. Our web design team is still working out the kinks. Glad you're enjoying the new, more readable layout, the share functions, and the comments "characters left" counter. "Top 5" post lists, search function, and a music section are on the way.

    Thanks, mike

PS: comments are off on this post PPS: i posted on problogger.net to advertise my site here (HA!) and Darren liked it. Here's a look at his "advertising experiment"

EDIT: Yes, I'm moving this post up in date, and re-posting it...I wanted to make sure it didn't get lost behind the HT b-day post.

Firstly, I just wanted to note that I intend my responses to always be a nod of respect for the people posting. Even if I respond to one of your comments in disagreement, I still respect your thoughtfulness and opinion enough to re-post and reply to your comment! Thanks for visiting.

  • changes to mikeshinoda.com

    October 22, 2008 74 Comments

We made some changes for you guys. Working on more. So far:

1- We fixed user flow so that when a user logs into LPN, they are automatically logged into MS.com. Hopefully this will clean up some of the logging / re-logging issues.

2- When posting a comment, show user how many characters he/she has left while typing ==> Status: We're working on it!

    3- Added "ShareThis" functionality :)

We're also working on making the site more easily readable (this was one of my comments), and adding a search function, and top 5 lists.

  • MIKESHINODA.COM RSS FEED

    October 22, 2008 47 Comments

As previously noted, mikeshinoda.com has an RSS feed. I wanted to take a second to talk about how to use it. If you're already an RSS user, ignore this post, and feel free to pitch in with your "expert" RSS suggestions in the comments section. I'll paraphrase a few key notes by Tim Ferris and Ryan Holiday. For an in-depth look at what Ryan had to say, go HERE

In a nutshell, RSS is like TiVo for your web browsing--you pick what you like, and it retrieves it. You just subscribe to the sites that you visit regularly, and they show up when something is new. You can do it via GOOGLE READER, or something similar.

Important note: a lot of web mail readers will allow you to subscribe to an RSS feed as well. if you're on a Mac, like me, you can simply add it to your Mac Mail RSS tab; you just go under File / Add RSS Feeds, and paste in the RSS feed weblink. When new posts show up on mikeshinoda.com, they'll simply (and immediately) show up in your email inbox. Very handy.

For everyone that wants to subscribe to my RSS feed, this is the link feed://www.mikeshinoda.com/feeds/blog.xml

    Enjoy, mike

EDIT: weird that the RSS link isn't working for some of you. try copying and pasting?
